Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling

Artistic director; director and CEO, TIFF

14TIFF adds some $190 million to the economy annually. This year, Bailey wrangled another round of Oscar contenders (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s La La Land) and indie hits (Tatiana Maslany’s Two Lovers and a Bear), and prompted big sales for Natalie Portman’s Jackie, the heist flick Tramps and Barry (a.k.a. the other Obama movie). Handling pumped up TIFF’s non-September offerings with an Instagram Film Festival juried by James Franco, a collection of virtual-reality works, and a Q&A series featuring Portman, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg.

Side gigs:

Bailey joined CivicAction in June. Handling, a board member of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, became an Officer of the Order of Canada that same month.
