When it comes to the charity gala circuit, some things never change—the hobnobbing, the peacocking, the plus-ones and the save-the-dates. Others do: when I first started covering the social beat over two decades ago, two of the bigger marquee charity events in the city were the Brazilian Ball, a carnival-themed affair run by a cabal of women known as the “Glitter Girls,” and Fashion Cares, an AIDS fundraiser presented by MAC. Both went extinct years ago.

New dots invariably appear on the social calendar due to changing tastes, fresh faces and newly acquired fortunes. In some cases, what is old is new again. For years, the Power Ball, held at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, was the art-world blowout of the year. It returns this year after lying dormant since 2019.

So, where to see and be seen in the season ahead? Behold, the ultimate Toronto social calendar for philanthropists, both aspiring and established, and everyone else who enjoys a good gala.

Chefs for Change

This culinary fundraiser is the ultimate event for epicurean altruists. The event brings together the city’s most renowned chefs, who donate their time and ingredients to raise money in support of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. After debuting last year, the event is already considered a big deal. Each chef runs a food station where patrons can graze on Michelin-grade bites while schmoozing. Restaurants participating this year include Sammarco, Nobu, Linny’s, 20 Victoria and Quetzal. Tickets are $1,000–which is a bargain when you consider the price of a splashy meal at just one of those restaurants. This year, the guest of honour will be Premier Doug Ford. tfsschefsforchange.com

Biblio Bash

Unfolding in the belly of the Toronto Reference Library, Biblio Bash is a glitzy black-tie evening that raises money for the Toronto Public Library Foundation. Here, a sit-down dinner brings out the beau monde, who jockey for an opportunity to give generously inside the Raymond Moriyama–designed edifice, which remains one of Canada’s most iconic buildings. In attendance: socialites, business bigwigs and sun-deprived writers. One year, literary lion John Irving auctioned off a dinner with himself during a live bid. This year, power couple Moez and Marissa Kassam will chair the event. tplfoundation.ca/biblio-bash

OCAD U Gala

A little bit Industry, a tad Euphoria, this lively gala is one of the newer dots on the Toronto cultural calendar. Bringing together collectors, philanthropists and mavericks, it was conceived to help support student bursaries at OCAD, Canada’s oldest and largest art school. Cue the immersive video installations and splashy artworks everywhere. The event’s small but sturdy committee is made up of social staples like Rana Florida, Canadian exec and painter Jordin Mimran, and Tokyo Smoke’s Alan Gertner. ocadu.ca/events-and-exhibitions/ocad-u-gala

Mad Hot Ballet

The tutu set meets the Rolex crowd at the National Ballet of Canada’s signature gala, held every year inside the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The annual rite of spring combines a ballet performance, a super-sized cocktail party and, for favoured patrons, a fantastical supper onstage. Afterward, principal dancers deign to cut a rug alongside the less-coordinated among us. One year, Mikhail Baryshnikov joined for dinner. Since 2007, the fête has raised over $17 million in support of the ballet’s various programs. Every year comes with an evocative new theme: this year’s is “Reverie,” a.k.a. a living daydream. national.ballet.ca/support-us/your-impact/mad-hot-ballet

Muskoka Motor Rally

Come summer, the social scene migrates to cottage country, creating a satellite charity circuit among those who use the word summer as a verb. The Muskoka Motor Rally is the buzziest: a high-energy vroom vroom that brings out philanthropists and automotive enthusiasts in support of the UHN Foundation and South Muskoka Hospital. Founder Jackie Wachsberg, who leads retail strategy at Gucci, leads the charge with her two brothers, Daniel and Andrew, all of whom got the philanthropic bug from their entrepreneur dad, Richard, founder of Apollo Health and Beauty Care. The goal this year: raising $1 million for vital emergency medical services. muskokamotorrally.com

TIFF Tribute Awards Gala

This one could be considered the Milky Way of galas thanks to its preponderance of stars. It’s the only gala in town where you run the chance of spotting Angelina Jolie, Harry Styles or Channing Tatum. Founded in 2019 in support of various year-round TIFF initiatives, it’s certainly the only Toronto gala receiving regular coverage in the Hollywood Reporter. Last year’s edition at the Fairmont Royal York was memorable thanks to a heartfelt speech from Jodie Foster about her six-decade career—and for being the last place I set eyes on Catherine O’Hara (RIP). tiff.net/tribute-awards

Art Bash

This one begins with a chi-chi sit-down dinner inside Baillie Court at the Art Gallery of Ontario, then descends into a more decadent after-party in Walker Court. Last year’s edition brought cabaret performers and eventually broke out into a full dance party. The marquee fundraiser goes toward mounting exhibitions and expanding the museum’s collection. It was co-chaired last year by a trio of power-sisters, Consuelo, Trinity and Victoria Jackman, whose family’s largesse to the AGO spans multiple generations. ago.ca/art-bash-2025

Art With Heart

One of Toronto’s longest-running fundraisers—33 years, to be exact—this is more of a paddle-heavy auction. First conceived in 1994 to support HIV charity Casey House, it began as a small party in a west-end gallery—“a colourful mix of artists, friends of artists, gallerists and gay men,” as auctioneer Stephen Ranger once described it. Over the years, it’s grown into a boozy, suited tradition held at the Carlu. Big names like James Lahey and Kent Monkman have donated work to the evening’s premiere auction of contemporary Canadian art, so any donations may end up with impressive ROI. caseyhouse.ca/support-us/events/art-with-heart

UHN Grand Cru

The city’s grandest convergence of oenophiles was founded by wine-lover-in-chief Todd Halpern, president of wine importer Halpern Enterprises, to help support the University Hospital Network. The long-standing event swirls toward its 23rd year in 2026, bringing together philanthropists, chefs and wine producers for a weekend of lavish dinners from the likes of Daniel Boulud and Jason Bangerter. The event has raised an impressive $174 million thus far to both advance medical research and build capital projects. grandcru.ca

Lit Gala

When this sparkly benefit launched in 2023, I dubbed it the best new gala in town—in part because it’s the only one where, for a good chunk of the night, at least 80 per cent of the room is on the dance floor. Bollywood bangers, shoulders-up bhangra and genre-crossing hip hop gets everyone moving. Founded by a group of South Asian professionals, it draws out a fresh generation of downtown do-gooders. People really dress up, too, in gold-trimmed lehengas and kurtas. The food is, unsurprisingly, bountiful, with dosas, tikka and biryani all on offer. Last year, proceeds went to H2O4ALL, a water charity. thelitgala.com

Bloor Street Entertains

This annual glitz-a-thon celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Having raised over $26 million for HIV/AIDS research to date, it’s gone from a small cluster of chefs serving food at Bloor Street boutiques to a behemoth with at least 20 dinners happening across ritzy retail locales such as Ferragamo, Saint Laurent and Rimowa. It all culminates in a boisterous after-party at the Four Seasons. canfar.com/event/bloor-st-entertains

Fête Chinoise

Each lunar year brings with it the joy of a new Fête Chinoise. One of the town’s most effervescent galas, it draws a crowd thanks to its spectacle of magnificent art installations, like life-size golden trees or hundreds of red candles scattered across the room. Founded by Deborah Lau-Yu, the evening brings together performers, artists and chefs for an extravagant celebration of Chinese culture and heritage. fetechinoise.ca/gala-2026
