Toronto’s five best pizzas
If the hour-long lineups at Libretto are any indication, Toronto’s thin-crust lust has never been more fierce. Five slices for pizza lovers with artisanal appetites.
DUCK CONFIT
Proving the maxim “you can never be too rich or too thin,” the luxurious duck confit pizza adds cream, mozz and bosc pear to this otherwise traditional Neapolitan crust. $16. Pizzeria Libretto.
PIZZA FICA
A tomato sauce–less beauty with figs, mozzarella, gorgonzola, prosciutto and arugula that’s even better than Terroni’s beloved C’t Mang. $17. Terroni Adelaide.
GIUDAICA
This vegetarian favourite pairs grilled artichoke with mint and gets a final unction of pecorino shavings and olive oil when it emerges from the oven. $12. Mangia and Bevi.
THE SOFIA
Fior di latte bocconcini melt into a simple house-made sauce of sweet tomato and fresh basil. $16.95. Via Allegro, 1750 The Queensway, 416-622-6677.
NAPOLETANA
A crisp, smoky crust is smeared with a deep red tomato sauce. Satisfyingly salty, the napoletana delivers an Italian-style umami punch with anchovies and briny black olives. $11.50. Marcello’s Pizzeria.
Sorry, Toronto Life, but for my money, the best pizza in town is from Magic Oven. Their “Phytonutrient Magic” pizza is absolutely incredible, overflowing with all kinds of fresh ingredients like real whole roasted garlic cloves, tender-crisp aparagus, real carmelized onions, grilled eggplant, roasted peppers and organic mozzarella. Yes, their pizzas are a little pricey, but with a choice of 3 different kinds of crusts (one gluten-free and one yeast-free) and an amazing selection of ultra-fresh, healthy ingredients, in my opinion they are absolutely the BEST pizzas in Toronto.
Does your staff actually even try the stuff they recommend? You seem to come up with exactly the same recommendations year after year, and I have often wondered if you just copy whatever you said last year. Honestly, Terroni’s pizza is awful….I was just there about a month ago and will never go back. Compare Terroni’s pizza with Magic Oven’s and I think you’ll agree.
You should also run a Toronto’s best delivered Pizza.
As much as I welcome these tips and suggestions can I make one of my own? I’ve tried the fig pizza, as well as the one at Marcello’s. Both very delicious and tasty but one place that seems to have fallen off the radar is “Ferraro’s”.
Excellent pizza, well priced EXCELENT service. They’re located on Eglinton just west of Avenue Rd. It’s worth the drive from Vaughan.
All these are great suggestions, another pizzeria to try is Franks Pizza House. This pizzeria has been around since 1965 everything had in house.
Try La Cucina Italiana on St Clair west of Dufferin.Pizzas are out of this world and the slices are only $2.00
I think that the writer should clarify what type of Pizza they are talking about and where to find the best. In this case, the writer is talking about Neapolitan type of pizza with thin crust and just enough crust. Some readers are comparing this to Magic Oven and pizza by the slice… If you are not a fan of Napoli pizza, then of course the suggestion above will not impress you. Can’t compare apples with oranges!
Terroni? Honestly you guys..
Please break away from the expected and over exploited. I wouldn’t mind a repeat win and/or nomination year after year, if the merit was warranted.
The pizza at Terroni is nothing special and the service horrible. With so many wonderful pizza restaurants to try in the city, must you really continue to placate the ego of Terroni.. I can basically recite your list of “Best Restaurants” year after year.
Hello food critics and conesieurs.
I am looking for a pizzeria (not just a pizza joint like pizza pizza or pizzaville) that makes huge, quality pizzas at least “50-60 inche monsters.” A chump,..I mean friend of mine would like to proove that he can eat more than me.
I know there are tons of pizza pubs in the States, (hence there high obesiety rate)but I am a Torontonian for God sakes and have no desire to burn more than a quarter tank of “black gold” to simply eat pizza. If anyone knows of a place that is ballsy enough to bake Gigantic pizza’s let me know! CONTACT ME AT: anomalygary@yahoo.com By the way, the duck confit looks delicious. If I ever see it on a menu I might just take a go at it…. “Try anything once” Peace.
Without a doubt Papa Ceo’s (near UFT on Harbor & Spadina) is a Toronto tradition.
In Thornhill/Richmond Hill, there used to be two (2) awesome pizza places. One has moved after 40+ years. The Pizza and Veal were awesome!) http://www.dantespizza.ca/locations.html
-8707 Dufferin Street. Vaughan, ON L4J 0A6, (905) 881-1070
-267 Baythorn Ave. Thornhill (OLD LOCATION NOW CLOSED)
The other went out of business in 1992 or 1993. It was opened by former Dante’s drivers & cooks. PREMIER GOURMET PIZZA in Richmond Hill. (Leslie & Highway 7).
THIS WAS BEYOND DOUBT THE BEST PIZZA. Double the price of the other guys. STILL MISSED BY ALL. They were doing thin crust, multi-grain, lactose free dairy, highest quality prosciutto & meats. Fresh ingredients. The others simply do not compare.
