Officer Bubbles takes Toronto
This G20 thing just isn’t going away. A video by Real News that went viral on YouTube last week shows a young woman blowing bubbles being threatened with arrest for assault. “If the bubble touches me, you’re going to be arrested for assault,” Constable Adam Josephs tells Courtney Winkels, who was, in all fairness, blowing multiple bubbles. In further justifying his reaction, Josephs explains that there’s detergent in the bubbles that could get into a policeman’s eyes. Another cop in the video seems both perplexed and amused by the whole exchange.
Later in the video, Winkels is shown being put under arrest, though it’s unclear why. She told the Sun that she was arrested for having a backpack and a lawyer’s number written on her arm. The incident has turned bubbles into a new symbol of peaceful protest. On Saturday, at a Canadians Advocating Political Participation rally at Queen’s Park, many of the 300 participants blew soapy orbs into the air. In analyzing Winkels’ arrest, others have focused on the seemingly erratic behaviour of Officer Bubbles, as he’s been dubbed. A new animated series shows him falling in love, then arresting his lover, and locking up Barack Obama for obstructing justice.
Officer Bubbles was only one of multiple examples of the Toronto Police giving themselves a black eye. Chief Blair’s misleading of the public on multiple issues was in my view worse. I expect a higher standard from a Chief.
However the politicians who have been dragging their feet on a full public inquiry are the ones who have shown themselves to be without scruples or interest in either the police of the public’s well being.
Reduce the BILLION dollar Toronto police budget until there is a full independent inquiry. The police need it as much as the public.
Officer bubbles is a meathead. Someone should arrest him for wearing SHORT shorts and exposing too much thigh. DOUCHE!
Just another authority figure power tripping. She stopped as she was requested, no sorry told to. I hope he gets reprimanded publicly for abusing his power.
Wow. This guy is a real hero(sarcasm for those too stupid to get it…). “To protect and serve” my ass!!!
G20 is an absolutely illegal meeting and should be stopped. The millions in dollars in security money, no taxpayer has authorized. We can vote for one idiot or a worse idiot, this not democracy.
We cannot express our opinions or object to this injustice or we are going to be pounded down. We are being ruled with an iron fist.
Welcome to Canada’s fast tracked NWO.
Please do not blame officer bubbles, there are people above.
Officer Adam Josephs also known as Hothead Bubbles should not even be in police with that type of rude attitude.
Government on all three levels are not worried about being accountable and outright will blindly support the police.
Who cares that police broke the law and stepped on our charter of rights.
We live in a fake democracy.
Adam Josephs is an idiot and should be put down like any vicious beast.
If you look on the Law is Cool website ( http://lawiscool.com/2010/07/17/const-adam-josephs-aka-officer-bubbles/ ) they purport to have a screen-shot of Adam Josephs (Officer Bubbles) Facebook page prior to his locking down the security settings on it.
Highlighted in red, Josephs descrives his employer as the City of Toronto, since 2007, “Taking out human garbage”
Classy fellow.
So forget he’s a cop, imagine you have a party in your backyard and friends invite friends you don’t know, but eveyones getting along, your parents come over, and are ok with the party but stay to keep an eye on things, then some stranger starts blowing bubbles in your moms face and won;t stop, would you kick her out of the party, or tell your mom to to leave
I don’t necessarily agree with the police or G20 but… I think she was trying to piss off police, who are trying to support their families just like you and me. I don’t think he responded harshly at all. I think he was very professional about it and gave her fair warning. Unfortunately, because the tape cuts out, I have to assume that they didn’t want us to see what really happened. She probably did something to deserve getting arrested, such as, blowing more bubbles. I would have arrested her too. Technically, it is assault, as lame as that sounds. Its just annoying.
What would you do if someone sat down in your workplace and blew bubbles in your direction (intentionally) and wouldn’t stop when you asked them to? Repeatedly?
You’d probably call the police. Then the police likely would charge them with assault.
The bemused officer was probably wondering why the young woman was behaving like such an irresponsible infant. What grown up blows bubbles in the first place, especially in the context of supposedly protesting a political assembly?
Incredible.
‘Officer Bubbles’ was both professional and restrained, which is difficult to do when you are confronted with immature, irrational, and passive-aggressive behaviour.
She got everything she deserved, not enough as far as I am concerned, bunch of spoiled children, the officer showed incredible restraint here, all of these protesters are an embarassement to the City of Toronto and Canada, wonder why the security costs so much? all you have to do is look at these MORONS who did everything they could to provoke the police, instead of letting them do their job which was to stop any REAL harm to the summit or the city. I have no sympathy whatsoever for these bastards, there is no need to waste anyone elses time or money on bullshit inquiries, great job done by Toronto Police
After looking at the video I wondered one thing, If the same police officer were lets say security of a dance club, I wonder if she would have had the guts to blow those bubbles in his face and honestly if she did for lets say.. fun, or due to being refused entry, I wonder what would have been the outcome..? Guess what I am trying to say is without a doubt she was provoking a person of office, the law the same person she would run to for help, if assaulted by some random dude. She did it Simply cos she knew the police officer would not openly or otherwise assult her, which he didnt and there is a thing called arresting somebody to keep them out of trouble which “trouble” is often self inflicted. So honestly he was serving and protecting her for her own good but she didnt know it, the age ol question is the cage to keep the lion in or us out? same difference. I didnt see what he did wrong, being stern with a youth who is a “Goth” “Activist” who was extremely passive aggressive in nature. “I dont feel very respected” coming from a person who just showed disrespect and quite literally mocking another PERSON who also happens to be a policeman.. whos trying to protect you…?? I am sorry sweetheart but I dont think you thought that one thru very much… Anyways everybody just think about it in both angles and you’ll see it.
Don
Anyone who was there knows full well the girl stopped blowing bubbles when told to. Contrary to what people would like to believe, there was absolutely no reason to arrest her. She was arrested for having a lawyer’s phone number on her arm (as protesters were advised to do by lawyers) and a knapsack containing medical supplies to anyone needing first aid. If those are reasons to be arrested in Canada, it’s not a country I want to live in and neither should you.
FACISM at it’s finest example. This clown, in all likelihood, probably thinks his dick is bigger because of his uniform. Evidently, the Toronto Police have given up giving psychological evaluations to applicants before hiring. Officer “Bubbles” laughable lawsuit will hold as much merit in a court of law as does his “professionalism”.
If Constable Adam “Bubbles” Josephs had a brain, he’d be on the ground, playing with it. Stick it, Bubbles. You’re a douche.
The fact that senior police officers lack the courage, integrity or intelligence to uphold any standard of behaviour for fellow officers is why the Toronto Police Service has become a sad joke. I am sickened as a taxpayer to see my hard earned dollars used to employ bigots, thieves and goons. As a soldier who has put my life on the line for this country I feel betrayed by Offcer Bubbles and others of his ilk, he is not part of the Canada I fought for.
She’s an idiot. She got what she was looking for, a night in detention and a $1,000 lawyer bill.
The cops were there to protect the world’s most important people who chose our great city to get together and solve the world’s problems. I feel very privileged to live in a great country where we have economic stability and are allowed to speak our minds (even if we are idiots). The cops were there to protect these idiots from real terrorists who would love to kill 100’s of the poor hard-done by activities to prove their point. Then the papers would read “Police didn’t protect Activities”.
Chris above says “Canada’s not the country he wants to live in”! That bubblehead should try that crap in almost any other country in the world and see how she gets treated. I guarantee she wouldn’t get the “respect” her little heart needed. She was arrested later because anyone with a lawyers name/number on their arm was there to cause trouble. Or was it too advance her modeling career??
Grow-up and get a job.
“The cops were there to protect the world’s most important people who chose our great city to get together and solve the world’s problems.”
Riiiight… All hail our benevolent overlords and thank them for allowing us to live for another day… – NOT !!!
Inequality in the world is rising, in the developed world the middle-class is disappearing, in the less developed parts of the world people who could afford food in the past will soon not be able to (due to QE and all the money flowing out from the FED which is inflating futures of food prices) and like during the last days of the Weimar Republic – the only people who are making the best money are speculators.
Unfortunately, peaceful times seem to be coming to an end and if we don’t want to live under tyranny and in poverty, people must stand up and even use violence if all else fails. And the likes of “Officer Bubbles” must be ridiculed whenever possible and opposed with brute force whenever needed.
Before any of you fascists tell me to get a job, I own a business and make a good living and help a handful of people do the same in these difficult times, but that doesn’t stop me from seeing what is wrong with the current system and that the G20 isn’t helping.
The world and it’s leaders have always done what they want and in the event you think you’ve swayed their minds and they have changed policies because of you?? think again they let you, cos of some other reason which will become apparent later on, but definately not because your VOICE was heard… Simply put, they dont do anything unless its all been calculated, you run on the streets and protest honestly do you think they care? are you that daft? and the other question is can they care? on a personal level.. No they wont and no they cant.. we recycle because they tell us to, ofcorse there were ppl who have been for years but majority do it cos they tell us to.. why now?? cos the world is dying? the world has been dying for years and we’ve known it.. but why now?? cos IT MAKES MONEY these days… thats why!
Anyways somebody here said “try that in any other country” and honestly Canada is one of the greatest countries in the world stop looking at it from a small angle, travel and spend years doing it not weeks or months years around the world and you will realize CANADA is the best country there is out there with all things considered..
Anywhere else the cop wouldnt have even been talking, they wouldnt be standing there letting you protest, the min that somebody does anything that is deemed “causing a disturbance” you can damn well be assured the batons and riot shields and tear gas would come out and there was going to be a beat down of not just her but everybody there.. cos weather you believe it or not, protesting is causing a disturbance regardless of its nature. But in Canada they the government takes great pride in atleast allowing its people to be heard even if there is not much they can do about it. so please dont be reckless in your comments about the government and their agents because they are trying their best.. dont take your freedom for granted and dont take a yard when given an inch.
As for that girl I am sorry but you really pushed it and search your soul if you were doing your job and you took your job seriously, and somebody who you were protecting was mocking you.. what would you have done?
You’re a model if you walked on a fashion show or had a big print ad posted at dundas square and ppl openly Mocked it and was laughing at it pointing and somebody spots you and walks up to you pointing “THERE SHE IS THERE SHE IS HAHAHAHAHA” and a huge crowd crowds around you taking pictures with their phones and blowing bubbles at you… what would you do?? and later they say NO i wasnt mocking her I was mocking the brand she was modeling for… and when you ask them to get lost and leave you alone they say HEY I havent done anything wrong you posted your picture there… blah blah blah..
While it is clear that the girl was intentionally annoying the officer, his reaction can only be described as stupidity of biblical proportions, not only at the time of incident but more importantly afterwards.
Essentially, one of Toronto’s finest, is stating that he is the highest authority, immune to all forms of criticism, inclusive of online commentary.
As amazing as this is, what is truly spectacular is that none of the police regulatory bodies seem to have really understood what this is about: all municipal, provincial and federal employees are public servants. This includes the next mayor of Toronto, our members of parliament, the Prime Minister and even Adam Josephs.
Public servants need to place the good of the public above their own and act accordingly. This does not mean that a police officer should let actual crime take place, but rather that there needs to be good reason for them to arrest someone. Good reason does not constitute having bubbles blown at you as the aforementioned is at best a minor annoyance.
That said, and as opposed to many folks that want to see Bubbles simply sacked, it is my opinion that the good Officer should be made an example of. He is basically a tutorial on “how not to be a cop”. Clearly, he does not have the mental attributes for the role so a suggestion would be to have him pick trash on the side of the highways for a few months and see if that suits his character better.
In closing, consider this old Latin saying “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” the answer is “all of us”.
That girl is an idiot…she was NOT blowing bubbles to be “cute” or “lighten the mood” as she claims…she clearly wanted to be disrespectful and bait the police. If any random person on the street came up to any one of you and started blowing bubbles in your faces, you would do worst than what Adam did. You also didn’t see the part where the female officer asked little Winkel Bitch numerously to cut it out and yet she continued. Protesters are complainers, that’s what they do, most of them are punks and low lives and that is why they have the time to cause chaos on the streets. It never occurred to them to them to stop whining and becoming a productive member of our society. No, instead, they feel like the world owes them something and destroy property to prove a non-existing point. Most of them protest without even knowing what they are protesting. Instead of making uneducated comments about a situation that none of you know about…get to know facts and contexts and then maybe you’re allowed to have an opinion.
I think this whole situation has been blown way out of proportion and an officer that was simply doing his job is being hung for absolutely no reason. Perhaps the color of his skin has something to do with it. Had Adam been a white officer…this public scrutiny would not be happening. Black officer, white protester…hmmmm….maybe that’s the real issue. There were video of white officers beating protesters and yet no one’s talking about that…those videos have not gone viral, there are no cartoons about them. I wonder why?????
@ NS:
Really? This is what you think this comes down to? Protesters are scum and the over 670,000 people that have viewed the video are all racists? I was wondering if there was another world class intellect like the constable in questions but apparently there is, and he/she is posting on this forum.
Lets make this really simple – in nonspecific terms, yes, most of the people out protesting should not have been. It was a waste of time and effort and put a needless strain on law-enforcement. That said, this is MY opinion, theirs was obviously different. We have a democratic right to peaceful protest and the argument that the soap could have gone in his eyes from the girl blowing bubbles makes it an act of aggression is laughable.
A. Josephs,
Welcome to Canada and the freedom of speech. Citizens have the right to express themselves online about their opinions as protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. If you don’t like being made fun of for your stupid conduct, you can always move to Iran or North Korea, where you can bust as much bubble blowing people that you want. You want to sue me to?
Funny how blowing bubbles is aparently nothing.. soap getting in eyes is a joke nothing to scream about… but an officer who had stated stop blowing bubbles… cut it out… and even after an official warning she still mouthed off to a POLICE OFFICER!!! POLICE OFFICER!!!!!!! not mall security not a night watchman A POLICE OFFICER!!!!! By her mouthing off and not doing what he said is a deliberate act and in ANY law of any country that is not acceptable… you can easily get charged with numerous things… first off protesting is NOT illegal true, however gathering in a large group can be. Its called an illegal gathering, rioting, unlawful disturbance, disturbing the peace, gathering with the intent of causing a public disturbance, public disorderly behaviour, not cooperating with law enforcement…lots of things in lots of different countries and canada is not excluded.. its just that the law enforcement is told to tolerate.. Canadian policeman are the most polite group for the most part than anywhere else in the world…
Police anywhere else you dont even have a chance to talk just put your hands on your head squat down and place idetification on the ground infront of you failure to comply will result in one thing arrest..
I cant get over what that lil goth twit said “I dont feel very respected” HOLY CRAP!! going to a protest and protesting shows respect??? baiting a person is respect??? negating the police is respect??? WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU smoking??? or has society become soo annoying as to only see people of office as a whipping dog? Oh so this lil twit can disrespect people and she gets OH shes a youth what can we do you know how young ppl are… write off excuse.. but an officer of the law telling this twit to stop and hell “we know how kids are these days” and he had every right to be forceful in his words to get her to stop.. the other officer asked her.. her name nicely… and what did she get?? a smart mouth… with bubbles blowing and then she gets told to stop and suddenly goes into poor abused child mode OH god please… this is just typical and stupid…a bleedign joke..
Well no matter what your take on the story, one thing is certain. Bubbles behaviour at the G20 resulted in his life being turned into a circus. I bet he didn’t expect this to be the moment that changed his life… the police have learned that if they are caught out doing things the public doesn’t like, the blue line does not protect from the ire of the public the same way it protects in the justice system.
Doesn’t matter who’s above. Officer Bubbles made a decision to break the law.
