Gerhard Supply, a men’s store that opened in the Junction on Saturday, has a made-in-Toronto mandate. Everything from shirts to bow-ties, sweaters to colognes are designed and produced in the city (umbrellas and a few shaving accessories are the only exceptions). Perhaps that’s why the store seems to share the same rugged-chic sensibility as many Toronto men—think tough-looking chinos and chambray and plaid shirts by the likes of Philip Sparks, Outclass and Muttonhead.
Owner Langton Willms (whose middle name is Gerhard) has long supported Canadian brands. He originally contacted designers from across the country, but narrowed his focus when he stumbled across a close-knit network of high-quality Toronto labels looking for distributors. “A friend gave me [Outclass designer] Matteo Sgaramella’ s number, Nozo reached out to me on Twitter, and Matteo lead me to Muttonhead,” he says. Willms was gratified to learn they were willing to work closely with a small, local shop—all the Philip Sparks pieces at Gerhard, for instance, aren’t even available at Sparks’s Ossington boutique.

Welcome to the neighbourhood. Nice to see a men’s clothing store become part of the community.
