Dear Urban Diplomat: Should I move in with my girlfriend to save money on rent?

My girlfriend and I have been dating for four months, and we usually spend five or six nights a week at each other’s places. My lease will be up in a few months, so I’m thinking of suggesting we move in together. With Toronto rents being what they are, I figure shacking up is my only ticket to a roomie-free lifestyle. When I mentioned my plan to a couple of friends, they balked. But I don’t see what the big deal is—we’re already practically cohabiting. Who’s right?

Love, as the saying goes, can make us do crazy things. Apparently, a bonkers rental market can, too. Ask yourself why you want to push the relationship forward so quickly: if the primary motivator is saving scratch, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons, and you’d be wise to wait. While you’re soul searching, also consider the possibility that your honeymoon phase will end before the one-year lease you’re likely to get locked into. The only thing worse than being stuck with roommates? Being stuck sleeping next to an angry ex.
