Dineen Coffee Co. is bringing a little coffee cred to the downtown core, an area otherwise dominated by Starbucks and Tim Hortons. The new espresso shop in the historic Dineen building at Yonge and Temperance is considerably larger and more upscale than most other indie shops in the city.

The countertops are custom marble, a sweeping red leather banquette runs along one wall and the floors are covered in hand-painted tile imported from South America (there’s even a massive chandelier that once belonged to the posh Royal York Hotel hanging from the soaring ceiling). The co-owners Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier also head indie film and television production company Temple Street Productions, which is behind the CanCon hits Being Erica and Canada’s Next Top Model. The pair worked with Social Coffee Co. to create a selection of custom roasts for the café. Dineen also makes its mochas with real chocolate ganache—a perfectly decadent sugar hit to stave off the mid-afternoon cubicle crash. 140 Yonge St., 416-900-0949, dineencoffee.com
