Yorkdale Shopping Centre has become the location of choice for incoming foreign retailers (Zara Home, AllSaints and J.Crew each opened their first Canadian store in the mall). The latest arrival: White House Black Market, a hugely successful American womenswear retailer. The brand—one of Michelle Obama’s faves—is known for its slimming dresses and budget-friendly basics in a palette of predominantly (you guessed it) white and black.

Accessories and casual pieces are sometimes overly embellished (we’d steer clear of the sparkly embroidered jeans, for instance), but the store is well worth checking out for conservative staples. A tailored shift dress, for instance, would work for both the office and the holiday party circuit, as would a cute pair of black loafer pumps and any number of silk blouses. A second location at Mississauga’s Square One is already open and a third will open in Newmarket’s Upper Canada Mall on November 12.
