House of the Week: $5.5 million for Canada AM co-host Valerie Pringle’s Casa Loma mansion
ADDRESS: 3 Clarendon Crescent
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Casa Loma
AGENT: Leanne Weld, Royal LePage J&D Division, Brokerage
PRICE: $5,495,000
THE PLACE: Built in 1906, this brick and stone house sits on a double lot on a private road with only six other residences. It’s even a listed heritage property (but don’t worry, the interior isn’t ancient—the home underwent extensive renovations in 1996).
BRAGGING RIGHTS: The house is currently owned by Andy and Valerie Pringle, who is better known as the erstwhile co-host of Canada AM and the host of the Canadian edition of Antiques Roadshow (she’s also a member of the Order of Canada—no big).
BIG SELLING POINT: The 105-year-old house was designed by architects Curry, Sproatt and Rolph, who had a hand in the 1907 alterations of the Financial District’s St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and built the National Club on Bay Street. If that doesn’t get you a membership, we don’t know what will.
POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER: We love the rich, vibrant colours adorning the walls. But if you’re into the stark, ultra-modern, all-white-all-the-time look you’re out of luck.
BY THE NUMBERS:
• $5,495,000
• $30,577.09 in 2011 property taxes
• 105 years old
• 6 bathrooms
• 5 bedrooms
• 5 fireplaces
• 3 storeys

finally some taste in this feature. what a nice home.
The private broadcaster clearly pays its employees well.
Books lining almost every wall…ahhhh, comfort!
wow $5.5M
is she even known outside of Canada???
the money doesn’t come from her, it comes from andy pringle, who is a prominent investment exec
of course, that’s terribly unfair… we surely don’t know for sure where the money comes from
Canada’s Housing Bubble has surpassed the US bubble.

Very warm and personal home!!!
There should be a pool for $5.5m.

Great reporting. Beverly Thomson is the co-host of CanadaAM, not Valerie Pringle.
@ActuallyWatchesCanAM: ‘erstwhile’ means ‘former’.
Nice exterior, shame about the tacky interior (except for the basement). On the plus side, they get to live on a street that pretends it’s a private drive.
@Larry You’re right, this headline isn’t misleading in any way:
House of the Week: $5.5 million for Canada AM co-host Valerie Pringle’s Casa Loma mansion
Taste, are you kidding! This is the tackiest, most out of date, junky, heinous house that has ever been in “house of the week”. You couldn’t pay me (or anyone I know) to live here, I’d get a migraine. I actually do like colour and have quite a bit of it in my home; granted it’s not on every surface and mixed with a million grotesque patterns. My grandmother has better taste. Other than the Sub Zero fridge that kitchen looks seriously out dated. The fact that there is no vent hood over the gas cooktop must be some sort of code violation, if they actually cook I really don’t want to see what gunk has built up above it. BLECH!!!!!!!!!! Goes to show you that money doesn’t buy taste.
“Money doesn’t buy taste” which is a hackneyed truism but it is obvious that a person that has that much time on their hands might spend that time helping out at a homeless shelter,a retirement home,a hospice, etc.
It is not so much tacky but dated. Fortunately most of it is in the circa-1989-ish furniture/window coverings which will go when the house is sold. Obviously it needs some cosmetic upgrades – carpeting, removal of wallpaper, updated paint colours, but it is a lovely home.
a little more restraint in colour and pattern choice would have made this home a classic. the kitchen, however, is too small, too narrow and looks unfunctional. the pringles obviously eat out a fair bit.
Could use a little more red….
Mom, you didn’t buy a $5.5 million house and decorate to your taste perchance…?
Lovely exterior but very stuffy and tasteless interior. I got a headache just looking at the pictures and I DO like colour! The kitchen is really sad. I have seen much cheaper houses look ten times better!
liveing in the casa loma neighborhood ,,you pay the price
NOT worth 5.5 million dollars. The location is great, of course. But, the home it’s self is outdated, dark, and dingy. It would need a lot of “catching up” interior wise, which could end up costing another 200, 000 or more. The kitchen is tiny and outdated, for that amount of money I would build a custom home with up to date finishings and a pool. I love Castle Loma, going there today actually!
Oh, and quote I would like to leave you with is… ” something is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it”
@ActuallyWatches: I see what you mean now. I guess putting ‘former’ in the headline would have made it too long or something.
Woah, same street as the Black Christmas house!
bar the colour photographs and legless dishwasher this is the same thing my ancestors lived in 200 years ago. perhaps its time we outlaw things that dont require imagination.
It’s a mystery why anyone allows Toronto Life to showcase their home in this feature, because every listing is absolutely torn to shreds! I’m not arguing with the comments because the majority of the listings here are in fact overpriced and horribly decorated – but I just wonder why the home owners allow their investments to become comment board fodder. Valerie should know better (and I’m not just referring to the all white appliances)
I want to invest in real estate Toronto. Can we consider this option as investment?
