Toronto’s Harvey Lin upset over 350 experienced milk tea masters from a handful of countries to win the enviable Milk Tea King title at Hong Kong’s annual International Milk Tea Competition last Saturday. With only five years of experience brewing milk tea (a 20-minute process that involves skillfully boiling tea leaves, filtering the brew multiple times and adding condensed milk), the Taiwanese-born but Canadian-bred Marathon Donuts and Coffee Shop co-owner’s win was particularly glorious. “It’s kind of like being told that the best Italian pizza comes from Scarborough,” Marathon customer Aaron Liu gleefully announced to the Toronto Star. Today, Lin’s expected to be back at his Scarborough shop, serving up a pared-down version of his winning brew (the original is likely too potent for delicate Canadian taste buds). [Toronto Star]
