The New York bakery first opened its quaint West Village flagship store in 1996. It went on to become an overnight pop culture landmark when Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda Hobbes shared a vanilla cupcake with pink frosting on a bench outside the bakery in an episode of Sex and the City. Fans lined up to recreate the moment, turning the neighbourhood shop into one of the city’s most photographed food spots long before Instagram.

Since its television debut, Magnolia’s celebrity cachet only grew, with shout-outs in Saturday Night Live and The Devil Wears Prada, when Andy mentions needing to get to the bakery before it closes to pick something up for her boyfriend’s birthday party.
Meanwhile, Magnolia’s banana pudding developed its own cult following, spawning countless copycat recipes. Now, almost three decades after opening its first location—and many international outposts later—the bakery is finally coming to Canada.

Franchisees Chetanshi and Shaishav “Shay” Thakkar will be rolling out 10 bakeries across Ontario next year. The company has yet to announce where its first Canadian location will open, but for anyone who’s ever made a trip to the West Village to recreate the Gen X moment, things are about to get a lot easier.
