TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Bono and The Edge walk the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall for Davis Guggenheim’s From the Sky Down

This is the first year that TIFF has kicked off the festival with a documentary (or, apparently, a rockumentary, to use the irritating neologism). Fans pressed themselves against the barricaded red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall, eagerly awaiting the arrival of U2, the subject of director Davis Guggenheim’s pic, and they weren’t disappointed.

Guggenheim appeared first, emerging from an SUV with wife, Elizabeth Shue. She looked charming in a simple knee-length belted black frock (she doesn’t know who made it—we asked), and received bigger cheers from the crowds than her man-of-the-hour hubby. One observer couldn’t help pointing out (very loudly) Guggenheim’s cursory resemblance to J.J. Abrams. The two dutifully made the rounds, with Shue playing adoring fan girl, pulling out her own camera and shooting her beau signing autographs (ah, so sweet!).

But then a pair of sunglasses showed up. Bono, rocking chic, violet-hued shades, hit the carpet with guitarist The Edge, signing autographs along the entire length of the barricade. The two appeared particularly taken with a Mr. T lookalike who had fashioned a homemade disco ball hardhat in their honour. Before being whisked inside, Bono expressed a small case of nerves about the audience reception of the film, and admitted he was about to see it for the first time. “It remains to be seen whether people are interested enough in music to sit through a film like this.”
