A rare and rather breathtaking early edition of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables will go up for auction this Friday in New York at Sotheby’s, and is expected to fetch around $20,000. Printed in 1909, one year after the novel was first published, the 14th-impression book sports a simple illustration of Prince Edward Island’s feisty redhead with the title embossed in gold below. The illustration features Anne’s face in profile, appearing uncharacteristically demure and—dare we say it?—even a little dour. It’s still a lovely image, but for children of the ’80s, nothing really says Anne like Megan Follows in a green pinafore and pigtail braids.
