Porter Airlines now being wooed by possible destinations
Porter Airlines has a couple of feathers to add to its cap this week. Its hub, the Toronto Island Airport, is one step closer to getting its proposed pedestrian tunnel, and now the airline itself is being wooed by destinations anxious to share in the airline’s success. Federica Nazzani, the CEO of the Windsor International Airport, is optimistic that Porter will soon operate flights from Windsor to Toronto, hoping the route will help increase business in the city. She claims opportunities are lost when travellers drive to Toronto or Detroit for flights. We can’t muster up much excitement for flights to Windsor, but we like the precedent. Perhaps the overlords at LaGuardia, Washington National and Philly International could take a page out of Nazzani’s playbook?

LaGuardia is out, alas, as it’s only a domestic airport – the only reason you can fly into it from Pearson, Trudeau etc is because they have US border preclearance in Canada. And that’s not likely to happen any time soon at the City Airport…
Newsworthy about flying to WINDSOR?! Oh Toronto Life come on and get a life! Nothing happens in Windsor – why would Porter wanna ruin a good thing and go there? Christ! Porter get you planes into DC & make Florida happen! I need another excuse to further block Pearson and Air Canada!
Maybe it’s time for Porter to have another IPO offering? I’m positive the lack of enthusiasm investors showed last year will reverse with wooing by Windsor.
I’m disappointed we haven’t heard anything else since Nov. I understand why people would berate the idea of Windsor as a tourist destination, but as a business destination it makes sense. Business travel is an important market for Porter. My employer often sends us to clients around Detroit, and they usually take VIA Rail. There seem to be quite a few other business travelers on board. On VIA that’s 5 hours to Detroit. On Porter, that should be closer to one hour. That would be absolutely brilliant, especially since the office is a short cab ride to the Toronto Island Airport.
I wish they went to the UK as the
offerings of Air Transat I would rather
not go there and Westjet does not either.
Not all of us can afford British Airways
either and it would be so much easier than
trying to trek up to Pearson.
I have a friend to uses them and she says
they are great for trips to the US.
Just something to consider even just
London would be great as my thoughts of
London Ontario or even Windsor Ontario
leave me flat as there really isn’t any
reason to go there other than to see
relatives or go to the US.
