Councillor Josh Matlow explains what’s wrong at city hall

The Toronto Sun quoted freshman councillor Josh Matlow yesterday on councillors’ salaries, how to fix them and why it’s all such a political hot button: “[The debate] becomes not about a reasonable salary but how we want to end up looking in the Toronto Sun.” Hilarious.

The regular outrage over politicians’ pay is absurd (and got even weirder last year), but we’re having a hard time understanding how Matlow’s proposal to fix this state of affairs would be much different from the status quo, which has council salaries set by a formula comparing other regional pay scales.

In any case, the idea that the Sun would be satisfied with anything short of councillors agreeing to weep and beg forgiveness every time their salaries go up gave us a little chuckle this morning. We expect Councillor Matlow will have that figured out by 2014.
