Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan makes 1960s prints pretty in a (mostly) demure spring 2014 collection

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Spring 2014

Toronto Fashion Week runs from October 21-26, in a large—and stylishly appointed—tent at David Pecaut Square. We’re posting full galleries from the buzziest runways. Here’s what trendsetters will be wearing in spring 2014.

DESIGNER

Pink Tartan, designed by Kimberley Newport-Mimran

THE SCENE

Since Newport-Mimran and husband Joe Mimran are basically the Kennedys of the Toronto society scene, there were a lot of familiar faces. Catherine Nugent sat front row, while model Stacey McKenzie chummed around with shoe designer Ron White and hair god Jie Matar. Nearby, Rana Florida and Elisha Cuthbert gabbed with seatmates and even Harbord Room hunk Corey Vittelo stopped by the tents to take in some capital-F Fashion.

THE COLLECTION

Nobody does basic pretty like Pink Tartan, and this collection was replete with flouncy pleated skirts, boatneck sweaters and crisp white blouses. The 1960s inspirations—an extension of the label’s Betty Draper-esque looks from fall 2013—showed up in tunic shapes and mod geometric patterns, including black-and-white checkers, diamonds and dizzying herringbone. The most hotly debated items (apart from the models’ somewhat visible nipples) were the jacquard pieces featuring bright, bold florals. They reminded us of bathtub daisies but others were cooing.

BEST PIECES

The staple shirtdresses with bouncy pleats would work equally well for the office or weekend brunches. An evening coat with three-quarter-length sleeves was classic Pink Tartan—cute with a timeless feel.
