Toronto Fashion Week runs from October 21-26, in a large—and stylishly appointed—tent at David Pecaut Square. We’re posting full galleries from the buzziest runways. Here’s what trendsetters will be wearing in spring 2014.
Loblaw’s ever-popular clothing brand Joe Fresh, designed by Joe Mimran
Like the opening scene in every high school movie, all the cliques were present: the jocks, like Dion Phaneuf and Joffrey Lupul; the models, including Canadian beauties Grace Mahary, Alanna Zimmer, Heather Marks and Meg Collison; the actresses (well, mostly Elisha Cuthbert, star of cancelled-too-soon Happy Endings); and, of course, the socialites, including Catherine Nugent and Joe’s wife Kimberly Newport Mimran, who is always first to offer a standing ovation. After the official after-party at King West’s Lee restaurant, rumour has it that stylists and men-about-town Corey Ng and Cary Tauben persuaded several models to decamp to a strictly hush-hush gathering at Soho House.
Canada’s most famous label went blue for spring 2014 with a collection dominated by navy. The suiting, embossed leather skirts and bomber jackets are all sure to sell well, but we have doubts about denim trousers with lace appliques and acid washed detailing and a zebra print trench with frayed hems. The most summery looks, which included pretty, silky tops and re-imagined athletic wear (one long skirt looked like it could have been fashioned from track pants) were fun and typical Joe Fresh. We also liked the Asian inspiration behind pajama-style suits, and the pagoda and floral prints.
After a few seasons of underwhelming menswear, this colleciton had a ton of great options for guys—especially the varsity jackets, double-breasted suit jackets and Thom Browne–inspired slim pants hitting just below the knee. For women, an iridescent black skirt and a fuzzy navy sweater were perfect fast-fashion for parties.
