We’ve been put through the wringer a fair bit over the past year, and fall’s tough-as-nails looks are an armoured reaction. Here, five of the top trends and where to find them in Toronto.

- 5. Footwear: HEIGHT (over-the-knee boots, very high heels) Though crotch-grazing boots are not a look for everyone, we’re sure many will try. The style looks good almost only on tall size twos and fours, but can be disastrous even then. Buyer beware.
Find it here:
Chasse Gardée. The much-hyped newish boutique carries impeccably stylish footwear.
Aldo. The Cassetty is more affordable than designer versions and more comfortable.

- 4. Accessories: MIXED METALS
Gaudy hand-me-downs from the ’70s and ’80s and bold vintage pieces are best. Most chain store baubles won’t stand the test of time and never have the wow factor of a piece from another decade. Also look for delicate ’40s-inspired hats and headpieces for special (and chilly) nights out.
Find it here:
Anthropologie. Head to one of two Toronto locations (Yorkville and at the Shops at Don Mills) for sweet hair accessories.
Carole Tanenbaum (Caroletanenbaum.com) is a local on-line collector and retailer with a fabulous selection of vintage and costume jewellery.

- 3. Colours: BLACK AND NAVY
So we’ve gone a bit emo—it’s to be expected with the economic turbulence and the disappointing summer weather. Expect to see people’s inner angst splashed all shades of (flattering) gloom come October.
Find it here:
H&M always has a thorough selection of dark, of-the-moment hues, and the price is right.
Pho Pa. The largely Canadian-made lines (like Rachel Sin’s, above) come in solid dark colours and flattering silhouettes.

- 2. Fabric: DENIM AND LEATHER
Lighter shades, torn, acid wash and cuffed are the prevailing styles in denim. To add to this badass appeal, leather will be in full force once the heat and hazy humidity cool off. Expect to see combinations of the two fabrics—and, for the bold, denim-on-denim—on city streets until 2010.
Find it here:
Over the Rainbow. The go-to purveyor of high-end denim is always on-trend.
The Public Butter. For a kitschy selection of vintage leather.
Exile is brimming with an array of vintage denim perfect for DIY torn jeans.

- 1. Silhouette: STRUCTURED (read: ’80s)
Shoulder. Pads. Yep, they’re back, giving simple looks a refined edge. Do not fear the fake shoulder. In general, big and billowy up top, lithe and lean on the bottom reigns supreme for fall 2009.
Find it here:
Carte Blanche. It’s the only store in Toronto that carries Gareth Pugh’s architectural pieces.

I popped into the BCBG store the other day and was a bit turned off by all the 80s fashions. But I guess that’s what’s considered “vintage” these days.
