The place

A two-bedroom loft with pitted concrete floors, high ceilings and lots of light in the evenings from a wall of west-facing windows.

The floors are a little rough looking, but some buyers love that:

This room is being used as an office:

The kitchen is heavy on stainless steel, which goes with the concrete aesthetic:

The history

The building dates from 1910, but was expanded in the 1930s and 1940s. It was originally built for Simpsons’ mail-order business and went on to fill Sears Catalogue orders before being converted into 600 homes in 2000. A doctor has lived in this unit since 2003.

Big selling point

There aren’t many condos within walking distance of the financial district that aren’t in glass towers.

Possible deal breaker

The shared rooftop space—which is only one flight of stairs away from this unit—has a pool, barbecues, gardens and even a path for walking dogs, but it doesn’t quite make up for the lack of balconies.
