The National Post has obtained two documents that outline how the mind-blowing amount of money allotted for G8/G20 security is being divvied up among government departments. At first glance, the numbers appear perfectly reasonable, until one realizes that they have to be multiplied by a thousand. When Post staffers tried to get an explanation from the various government departments, they received redundant responses—if a response was received at all—that shed little light on the subject. On why CSIS needs $2.8 million, a spokesperson said, “We support the RCMP in the accreditation process and we contribute to the production of the threat and risk assessments linked to the G8/G20 summits.”
Godspeed to auditor general Sheila Fraser in trying to get to the bottom of this mess.
