Liberty Village to stop smelling like fresh-baked bread by 2013
Canada Bread, the company that pumps out Dempster’s baked products, will be closing three of its plants in the GTA over the next three years, including the massive bakery located incongruously among Liberty Village’s art and design firms. Production at the Toronto locations is shifting to a new $100-million state-of-the-art factory—expected to be the largest bakery in the country—located in an as-yet undecided southwestern Ontario location. The decision will affect 435 employees, who will be given the opportunity to move to the new location or work at 13 plants remaining in the city. As for filling the void left by the soon-to-be-emptied Liberty Village plant, we have a radical suggestion: condos.
Just remember, Dempsters was there first. The great industrial history of that area should not be demeaned in this way. Massey, Inglis etc. were major employers in Toronto once upon a time. Sorry if the smell of baked bread bothers anyone.
It is a vile smell to wake up to every single day and puts me off bread. Besides their trucks are always clogging up the roads and making crossing streets in Liberty Village a nightmare. More than once they have nearly run people down turning on the Dufferin and Liberty traffic corner. I am glad they are going less large truck traffic the better.
The dreams of food lover, Fresh bread in the morning, roasting coffee, the smells of herbs in a garden. But wait once again the city I truly love for reason that others deem not so pompous have something to say about bread makers also. Whaaaaa lets cry. Come on people worlds greatest city with the world worst people. I hope their mega factory makes Ontario smell like fresh baked bread. Before I read ridiculous comments my first job was industrial bakery when I was 14 now at 28, that particular smell brings back lots of memories…Love your City
