The look-at-me sock trend has become so ubiquitous that Queen West now has a shop solely for the intermediary between foot and shoe. Floorplay has socks of every stripe, colour, and pattern, including hard-to-find label Richer Poorer’s suit-appropriate pairs, Pook’s colourful twists on the reliable work sock ($12 for 2 pairs) and Sock It To Me’s knee-highs printed with sock monkeys or moustaches ($10).

Along with the jazzy patterns, owner Janet Wright says specialty brand socks will last longer than those in the multi-pack you’d pick up at a department store. The family business (Wright’s husband is a silent partner, and her kids modelled for the sandwich board outside) also carries a small selection of underwear, plus socks for infants and children. Or, for the young at heart: specially cushioned skateboarding socks by Stance ($8—$18).
