TIFF has a laid-back reputation among film festivals: unlike glitzy Cannes and Venice, stars on TIFF’s red carpets often sub jeans and unbuttoned collars for tuxes and glam gowns. Based on early evidence from last night’s opening events, this year’s festival A-listers might finally be bringing it. Here, our favourite looks from the first night of red carpets.
Glenn Close looked perfectly polished at the anniversary screening of The Big Chill in an all-black look with a diagonal neckline that echoes the point of her sling-back stilettos

A noticeably slimmed-down Dan Stevens hit the The Fifth Estate premiere in a slim-fitting blue suit, black cotton dress shirt and no tie. No wonder GQ named him the most stylish man of the year
Although Mia Wasikowska’s hair and makeup were a little blah, her red Dior dress at the the Only Lovers Left Alive premiere was minimalism at its best
French actress Léa Seydoux worked a feminine Prada dress made of chantilly-lace at the Blue Is The Warmest Colour after party. Her side-swept hair keeps the vibe ladylike (her co-star Adèle Exarchopoulos went a different route)

Benedict Cumberbatch went classic in a Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo and bow tie on the red carpet for The Fifth Estate. We vastly prefer this side-parted hair to his scraggly, bleached out Julian Assange look
Dutch actress Carice van Houten—a.k.a. Melisandre from Game of Thrones—wore a dramatic Christian Dior couture gown with floral embroidery on the red carpet for The Fifth Estate. We love the unexpected touch of her vintage, magazine-shaped clutch
Joseph Gordon-Levitt repped the double-breasted suit at last year’s festival; this year, English actor Tom Hiddleston led the charge in a great black version with a velvet shawl collar on the Only Lovers Left Alive red carpet
Alicia Vikander’s look at The Fifth Estate premiere was easily our favourite of the night. The actress (who is lucky enough to be dating Alexander Skarsgard) opted for a simple, low chignon and light makeup, which put the focus on the show-stopping elegance of her floral Erdem gown
