Dsquared sends cigarettes down the catwalk (oh, and some models, too)

Dsquared boys Dean and Dan Caten like a bit of catwalk gimmickry—remember the bloody models and the bottles of beer? Hence our total lack of surprise that they sent models toting cigarettes down the runway at their fall 2012 ready-to-wear show in Milan on Monday. Sure, the lit ciggies in custom-bejewelled holders fit with the collection’s early-’60s vibe, but we’re betting they were more about generating news stories. Besides, Dean and Dan are late to the trend: the studs of Mad Men have been glamourizing smoking for a while, and Kate Moss puffed her way down a catwalk last year. Come on guys, we thought you were fashion forward.
The vast majority of the general public has no idea who these two guys are, nobody cares abou them. So this non-story will fade away quickly.
I hope the by-law officers enforced the laws and fined these idiots for smoking in a public place, smoking in the work place and a number of other laws they broke with this gimmic. Was there not an issue a while back when a certain foul mouthed drunk fallen actor came to town on his ego tour where he smoked on stage and was told if he lit up he would be charged? Same applies here and there is photographic evidence to prove they broke the law taken by professional sources.
@ David: this show took place in Milan. Europe smoking laws do not exist.
The only reason this story has shock value is because TL made this otherwise non-story an issue. It was half a world away. Normally we’d be none the wiser. I like D Squared but this was a lame rip off on the heels of the Mad Men success.
Actually HUGOGIRL there are smoking laws in Europe, definitely not in Austria however. As for countries that strictly abide by these rules, there are those nations that aren’t that stringent but the laws are there and these are typically the ones that have no real regard for the law to begin with. There are very few Euro countries that even allow indoor smoking anymore. But you’re certainly right that TL clearly has nothing else to talk about if they have to write about this ridiculous non-event.
