The house for sale at 55 Walmer Road

Address: 55 Walmer Road
Neighbourhood: The Annex Agent: Carol Teichman and Rob Yale, Re/Max Realtron Realty Inc., Brokerage Price: $2,850,000

The place: A seven-bedroom, three-bathroom Victorian mansion with another three bedrooms in a separate basement apartment.

The history: Built in 1897 and converted into a rooming house in 1960, the home was listed on the city’s heritage inventory in 1974 and turned back into a single family home over the course of two years in the early 2000s.

Big selling point: The four stained-glass windows, original to the house, are by Robert McCausland Limited, which claims to be the oldest stained-glass company in the Western Hemisphere. And there are other historic touches, like the winding oak staircase in the foyer.

Possible deal breaker: Seven bedrooms would be great if the homeowners’ names happened to be Mike and Carol Brady. For a lot of families, though, it will probably mean a lot of spare and unused space.

By the numbers:

The house’s centrepiece is this ornate stained-oak staircase.

There’s a small powder room off the foyer.

The living room’s bay window is big enough to envelop a piano.

And there’s a formal dining room, naturally, complete with ceiling medallion. The fireplace runs on gas.

Everything in here is recently renovated. The appliances are KitchenAid and the countertops are quartz.

Toward the back of the house there’s a smaller, less impressive staircase.

The second floor has this office. There’s another gas fireplace in here, and the bookcases are built in.

There are also three bedrooms on the second floor. This is one of them.

Another bedroom. This warren of rooms was once split up into separate apartments, but the house was turned back into a single-family home about 15 years ago.

There’s a family room on the third floor, and also three more bedrooms.

This bedroom has ladder access to the attic, which is super exciting.

Another third-floor bedroom.

And the master bedroom. The bay window is amazing, but the buyers are probably going to have to do something about that carpet.

The house has a two-car garage, but it doesn’t have much in the way of a backyard.
