House of the Week: $5.85 million to live in a castle in Rosedale

Address: 119 Glen Road
Neighbourhood: Rosedale-Moore Park
Agent: James Strathy Warren, Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited, Brokerage Price: $5,850,000

The Place: A castle, grand even among stately Rosedale homes, on Glen Road.

Bragging Rights: Dubbed “La Tourelle” by its original owner, W. Claude Fox, this 1904 castle was designed by Eden Smith, who is best known for Forest Hill’s Grace Church on-the-Hill, along with the Wychwood, High Park and Beaches branches of the Toronto Public Library. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s said that the team that assembled this home also had a hand in building Casa Loma. La Tourelle has been on the market at various points over the course of the past five years.

Big Selling Point: Sure, lots of homes have heated floors nowadays, but that doesn’t compare to having an actual fireplace in the master bedroom’s en suite washroom. Also, there’s a live-in coach house that supposedly rents for $4,300 per month.

Possible Deal Breaker: The homeowners are “Anglophiles, full stop” says the listing agent, which would explain all the Union Jack paraphernalia scattered throughout the home. If the buyer roots for another soccer team (or just can’t stand any more royal baby speculation), they’ll want some new furniture.

By the Numbers:

• $5,850,000 • 100 years old • 7 bedrooms • 7 washrooms • 5 parking spaces • 5 fireplaces • 2.5 storeys • 1 live-in coach house
