It feels like just yesterday that Toronto restaurants finally landed in the pages of a Michelin Guide, but the renowned restaurant rankers just announced their third round of updates to our city’s selection of top spots. Four new restaurants were each awarded one star (bringing Toronto’s total of starred establishments to 16), but only one of them—DaNico, the swanky new Italian kitchen from the Don Alfonso team—is actually in Toronto. That’s because the guide has expanded its territory beyond city limits, reaching as far as the Niagara region to the south and Simcoe County to the north. In 2022, Toronto’s inaugural list saw the Michelin inspectors venture out of the core only twice: to Scarborough’s SumiLicious for Sumith Fernando’s superb Montreal-style smoked meat and to Thornhill for chef John-Vincent Troiano’s Nordic-inspired tasting menu at the now-closed Frilu.

Noticeably absent from the new list is LSL, the new $680-a-head restaurant with three Michelin-starred chefs in the kitchen from William Cheng, the man behind Sushi Masaki Saito, Toronto’s only two-star restaurant. The super-exclusive spot only served its first multi-course meal to the public in mid-May, though, so there’s a good chance it didn’t open in time to make the cut. Or maybe it’s just that tricky to snag a reso at a nine-seat restaurant. I guess we’ll find out in the guide’s fourth edition.

The other three new one-star restaurants added to the guide are:

The Pine, a new restaurant in Creemore from husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Cassie Austin, with a menu inspired by Jeremy’s travels in Italy, Hong Kong and China.

Hexagon, in Oakville, for chef Rafael Covarrubias’s contemporary French dishes. (Covarrubias also earned the Michelin Young Chef award.)

Pearl Morissette, chef Daniel Hadida and Eric Robertson’s heralded microseasonal farm-to-table tasting-menu restaurant in Jordan Station. (Pearl Mo also took home a Michelin Green Star for its sustainable practices.)

Four new best-value-for-money restaurants were also added to the list, bringing Toronto’s Bib Gourmand tally to 23. They are:

Conejo Negro, a buzzy new spot in Little Italy for Creole and Cajun cuisine (and one of our own favourite new restaurants of the year).

Rasa, Harbord Village’s more casual sister restaurant to Sara.

Guru Lukshmi, a fast-casual kitchen for South Indian dishes and Jain specialities in a Mississauga plaza.

Berkeley North, for California-inspired cuisine in downtown Hamilton.
