The 50-layer chocolate cake at Louix Louis

There will be no shortage of muckety-mucks in town for TIFF, but here’s hoping some have really (really) deep pockets and are on a break from their GLP-1 regime. To celebrate the festival’s 50th anniversary, Louix Louis restaurant at the St. Regis hotel has created a 50-layer chocolate cake—and they’ll be selling each of its six pieces for a breezy $500 a pop. And once they’re gone, they’re gone.

“TIFF’s 50th anniversary is a milestone worth celebrating in a big way,” says pastry chef de partie Igor Salabai. “We wanted to create something that embodies the spirit of the festival—bold, artistic and unforgettable.”

The decadent dessert—a take on Louix Louis’s signature 13-inch chocolate cake—will be 25 inches tall, and each slice will weigh almost 10 pounds. At the heart of the cake is a luxurious sponge made with premium French cacao. A surprising hero ingredient—mayonnaise—adds richness, and the cream layers are made with butter, cacao and hazelnut paste. And of course, the whole shebang is sprinkled in edible gold flakes.

Each slice will be served on an enormous custom plate, accompanied by chocolate sauce, chocolate garnishes and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. (But will diners get to wear the little chocolate crown? For $500, they absolutely should.)

Not a sweets oligarch? You can tuck in to Louix Louis’s other extravagant TIFF offerings, like a gold-plated 50-ounce Australian Wagyu tomahawk, flambéed tableside with Macallan 12-year scotch and paired with a sabred bottle of Perrier-Jouët’s Belle Époque 2016 ($1,500 for two to four people). Or there’s the bargain-basement caviar and cocktail pairing, featuring osetra caviar with gold flakes ($250).
