The Dish Power Rankings: Maple Bacon Jam Cronut Burger Edition
Morpheus parties with Drake, and the CNE’s gluttonous culinary freak show gets the American media’s attention.
1. Momofuku Daishō (no change)
With its brand new summer patio Daishō is even busier this week than last: only a pair of tables is available on Friday. Saturday is booked solid.
2. Big Crow (no change)
A single spot is open Friday night (5 p.m.). Nothing is available for Saturday.
3. Playa Cabana Hacienda (↑1)
Actor Laurence Fishburne joined Drake at an exclusive party at the newest addition in the Playa Cabana taco trio.
4. Canadian National Exhibition (new this week)
The annual fair’s food tent is making headlines south of the border for its Maple Bacon Jam Cronut Burger: the New York Daily News introduced the savoury-sweet monstrosity to the U.S.A., food blogging giant Eater posted a pair of stories about it and even The Atlantic took notice.
5. El Catrin (↓2)
After a full reservation book for the last two weekends, two tables are up for grabs on Friday. Saturday is completely packed.
6. Bar Isabel (↓1)
Don’t bother trying to get in at Grant van Gameren’s Little Italy tapas bar before 11 p.m.
7. THR & Co. (↑2)
Mark Pupo called the tartare at Cory Vitiello’s new clubhouse the most flavourful and picturesque he’s had all year.
8. La Carnita (↓1)
Evidence the city’s taco fever is as hot as ever: people are still lining up at the College Street taqueria for more than an hour on weekends.
9. The Chase Fish and Oyster House (new this week)
Chef Michael Steh opened a pair of seafood restaurants in the heart of the Financial District this week. Only a handful of weekend reservations are available for each.
10. Origin North (back this week)
The Star’s Amy Pataki says Origin North is bigger and better than its downtown predecessors (apparently, Claudio Aprile’s food tastes better in North York).
Italian fashion designer Domenico Dolce showed up at Charles Khabouth’s clubby Italian resto-lounge Buonanotte after checking in on his namesake brand’s new Yorkville boutique. Meanwhile, Toronto designers Dean and Dan Caten were spotted partying midweek at another King West Italian resto-lounge—the plush, new Cibo Wine Bar—and Peter Gallagher, a.k.a. Sandy Cohen on The O.C., had another dinner at The Grove.
