Bar Volo’s annual IPA Challenge is sort of like March Madness, except that it takes place in May and involves hoppy craft beers instead of U.S. college basketball teams. On May 4 and 5, 32 rare cask-conditioned India pale ales from 32 different Ontario and Quebec breweries will compete in a head-to-head, bracket-style tournament, with the name of each revealed only after it’s eliminated. The final four brews move on to one last round in October at Cask Days, the huge annual beer lover’s party that Bar Volo throws each year. Tickets for next month’s event are $20, and include one sample and a commemorative glass, with each additional quarter pint costing $2.50. (Although the challenge isn’t for a few weeks, tickets are moving fast.) At the end of the challenge on Sunday night, the recently renovated bar throws open its doors to the public for a closing party, with 26 variations of IPAs on tap. Find out more »
