Big news, burger fans: on September 4, starting at 11 a.m., the Duncan Street outpost of Rudy is giving away 50 limited-edition burgers in honour of John Candy: I Like Me, Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds’ documentary about the legacy of the Canadian actor, which is kicking off TIFF.

“He’s a great Canadian and a comedy legend. One of my favourites,” says Luke McCann, the restaurant’s co-founder. Pop into any of the chain’s locations in Toronto and you’ll find photos of Candy on the walls. “He’s been part of the Rudyverse since we first opened. This burger is our way of celebrating him.”

The Canadian Bacon (named after Candy’s 1995 cult movie) tops Rudy’s signature smash cheeseburger with a slab of dredged and deep-fried peameal bacon. And on the morning of the film’s premiere gala, the first 50 people in the line will enjoy one for free—no gristle consumption required. For those who would rather pay instead of line up, the burger will stay on the menu until September 7.

Though, admittedly, some of us were hoping for, say, Jacobs and Co. Steakhouse to launch a ’96er eating contest in homage to the famous Great Outdoors scene in which Candy takes down each and every bite of a honking steak (fat and all) to earn a free meal for his family at a backwoods chophouse.
