The latest trick to staying relevant in the culinary world: launching a casual spin-off. In the last few months, Cabbagetown trattoria F’Amelia debuted its next-door tapas bar, Latin hotspot Valdez launched a spin-off speakeasy and midtown restaurant John and Sons announced plans for a new raw bar. Now Barberian’s, the prestigious steakhouse from owner Arron Barberian, is expanding with a mom-and-pop style sandwich shop. Opening just three doors down from the 5o-year-old restaurant, TLP (short for Three Little Pigs) will add some midday diversity to the neighbourhood’s current crop of fast food outlets and sub shops. The new space, which opens before Christmas, will stick to home-style drinks and snacks, like iced tea, apple cobbler and sandwiches stuffed with lamb, meatloaf and peameal bacon.
