When Richard Peddie retired as CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in March, he left a robust balance sheet, a championship drought and a recommendation for a successor: Tom Anselmi, the company’s chief operating officer. Now, six months later, Anselmi has officially been sworn in as MLSE’s new president (though not as CEO, leaving the door open for another high-level hire). The abysmal records of the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Marlies and Toronto FC have some sports columnists wishing that the company had looked elsewhere for someone less likely to maintain the status quo (which roughly translates as someone who would focus on winning, not dollars). However, Anselmi insists he’s here to win: “It’s all about team success. That is our priority. This town, when we start winning, it’s going to be amazing.” We imagine it will be, Tom—now please make that happen.
