Robyn Doolittle talks about Rob Ford on Late Night With Seth Meyers

Toronto Star reporter Robyn Doolitte’s ceaseless quest to explain our mayor to Americans continued on Wednesday night with an appearance on the third-ever episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, NBC’s replacement for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. (Fallon, of course, has been moved to the Tonight Show).

Doolittle, who is promoting her new book, Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story, was originally scheduled to be interviewed by Seth Meyers on Tuesday night, but she was preempted in favour of the night’s other scheduled guest, Kanye West. Kanye’d by Kanye! What an honour.

Doolittle’s conversation with Meyers touched on some familiar territory. She recounted a few of the classic Ford stories, like his attempt to cover up the fact that he had drunkenly berated a couple at a Maple Leafs game in 2006. Ford initially denied he was even at the game, but later had to admit he was there after the press learned that he’d handed out business cards to the crowd. “I love the level of drunk when you’re handing out business cards,” Meyers said. “Like, it’s like, ‘I do parties.'”

There was even a little screen time for this picture of a sweaty, hammered-looking Ford posing with a bachelorette party. If this is what it’s like when a reporter who covers the mayor does the U.S. late-night circuit, we can only imagine what might happen if Ford makes good on his promise to appear on an American talk show himself.
