An American investment company is looking into purchasing the Toronto Maple Leafs

American equity firm Providence Equity Partners is apparently interested in buying the Toronto Maple Leafs. The news follows rumours earlier this year that the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan was shopping its majority stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the squad’s parent company. According to the Toronto Star, the firm has “a track record in sports and media,” which offers a strong indication of why it’s interested in the club: to maximize television revenue (Rogers is interested in the Leafs for the same reason). Of course, the Leafs wouldn’t be the only pro sports team to be scooped up by an equity firm—sad evidence that the eccentric team owner (at least in North America) may soon become a thing of the past.
