Strubs Food purchased, fate of pickles remains to be determined
As we suspected, the insolvent Strubs Food Corp. (maker of the much-loved Strubs pickles) has been bought by shelf-stable food manufacturer Whyte’s Food Corp. Inc. What the acquisition means for Strubs’s pickles, though, isn’t clear: although Whyte’s already has its own line of pickles, the company has yet to reveal its plans for Strubs’s Brantford facility. While it’s too late in the season to contract with Ontario cucumber growers this year, cucumber-farmer-cum-expert-pickle-commentator Fred Froese revealed in an interview with Better Farming that he’s getting some good vibes from the sale, and remains hopeful that Whyte’s will maintain the Strubs brand and quality. Pickle lovers rejoice: the fate of Ontario homegrown pickles isn’t sealed just yet! [Better Farming]
