Introducing: The Lansdowne Cone, a new ice cream parlour set to lure patrons westward

“Blansdowne,” to use the oft-deprecating moniker for the strip of Bloor around Lansdowne, may be losing traction with the recent addition of new places to eat. One such business is The Lansdowne Cone, which opened its doors a few weeks ago to an enthusiastic reception from the area’s residents.

After several summers driving Maypole Dairy delivery trucks, owners Andrew Helfrich and Alex Sinclair decided they wanted to get behind the counter. “It’s a lot more enjoyable seeing someone enjoy the finished product,” says Helfrich. The pair still gets their ice cream from Maypole Dairy Products in Etobicoke, with small batches made daily. They say it’s the best they can find locally and this style of production ensures freshness.

Customers can get one scoop ($3) or two ($3.75) in a cup or cone, and kids get their mini-fill for $2.25. With nostalgic flavours like Tiger Tail and Heavenly Hash, The Lansdowne Cone aims to draw adults as well by tapping into their childhood memories. Homemade waffle cones will arrive in time for summer, but for now customers can top a plain, sugar or waffle cone with various gummy candies and sprinkles ($0.50). The store is currently open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, but Helfrich and Sinclair plan to extend the hours once temperatures rise and it stops raining quite so much.
