Black Watch: Today’s Top Stories

Lord Black’s pronouncement published today clearly indicates his resignation to the prospect of jail. “I can cope with it if it comes, and it will…only compound the injustice of this entire vendetta,” he wrote to the CBC. “Prison would be a bore, but quite endurable… I can get on with anyone and adjust to almost anything, and I don’t consider [prison] shaming.”

Well, if that’s not shaming, how about the behaviour of his co-counsel Edward Greenspan, QC, who made such a big deal of refusing to sit with his client, Karlheinz Schreiber, before a Parliamentary ethics committee: “I’m not a potted plant. I’m not going to go to that kind of process. It’s not a fair process…it’s a political circus.” And what is Edward doing this week instead? He’s hopped a plane north to Sudbury, where he’s been doing more than getting stinko while he thinks no more of Inco. Edward is defending “suspended” criminal attorney Don Plaunt on charges of sexual assault. According to The Sudbury Star, Eddie’s been using a familiar tactic in his effort to discredit the alleged victim currently on the witness stand. To wit:

“On another occasion, the man and Greenspan engaged in verbal jousting, after the man said he couldn’t remember where he went after leaving McMaster University. He either went to live in Toronto or to Fruitland near Hamilton, he said. He had lived in both places several times, but couldn’t remember specifically when.‘How long did you stay when you went back to the place where you don’t know where you went?’ asked Greenspan.‘I don’t know,’ replied the man.‘What did you do when you went to this place where you don’t know where you went?’ asked Greenspan.‘I don’t know,’ replied the man.Several similar questions by Greenspan all elicited the same ‘I don’t remember’ responses from the man.As Greenspan continued, trying to encompass all of the possible variables of the unknown in his questions, the man became exasperated.‘I don’t know what you are talking about,’ he told Greenspan.‘I don’t know what you are talking about,’ Greenspan told the man.The trial is continuing.”

Sound familiar? As for why Eddie passed over Karlheinz (beyond his righteousness), one local wag of the juridical persuasion offered a one-word query in return: “Money?”
