After studying theatre and touring with a puppetry company, Mara Zigler worked as a picker at Toronto vintage stores. In 2015, a childhood friend brought her along to help style a music video, and Zigler quickly saw the potential of using her particular set of theatrical and sartorial talents for film. Two years later, Zigler designed the quirky, youthful looks in Jasmin Mozaffari’s TIFF debut feature, Firecrackers, and she’s since made a name for herself in low-budget, high-acclaim indie films. Her resumé includes recent festival circuit darlings Matt and Mara, Measures for a Funeral and the short film Motherland, an Oscar contender. This month, Zigler is heading to Vancouver to design the costumes for her friend and collaborator Kelly McCormack’s new experimental film, which stars Tatiana Maslany and Tess Degenstein. Here are the items Zigler is coveting for her eclectic Roncesvalles home.

Italian designer Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi’s hand-blown champagne glasses are crafted at a family-run studio in Czechia. “Sgroi was apparently inspired by the shape of historic Italian nuns’ habits,” says Zigler.
This piece by Italian artist Gaetano Pesce is made out of soft, adaptable polyurethane foam. “I love the idea of centring a room around a throne. This chair has a powerful energy—it feels alive, like there’s a ghost sitting on it.”
Ceramicist Giovanni DeSimone is known for his cheerful, folksy designs. “I saw one of his vases at the St. Lawrence Market 10 years ago and thought it was so fun. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with finding his pieces.”
François-Xavier Lalanne designed this cushion in the 1970s to accent his sardine box–shaped sofa. “Sardines and anchovies are my favourite foods, and I love the playful, childlike look of the metallic material.”
This throw pillow is made in Los Angeles by design studio Iko Iko out of black silk taffeta. “It reminds me of a 1980s ball gown. It’s so dramatic—the ruffles almost resemble Elvis Presley’s hairstyle. When I’m reading, painting or knitting, I like to sit against the wall on a pillow.”
This antique Victorian pincushion is made out of silver and emery. “I don’t have a studio set up at home—my sewing machine is in my living room—so I like to have practical things that are also beautiful to display.”
Casa Verónica is a Texas ceramic and glassware brand that makes a range of funky, vibrant housewares. “This lamp has a sense of humour, and I love displaying ceramic textures in my home. I have several side tables that all have different styles of lamps on them.”
