- Dallas Curow and Brian Fauteux, married at the Berkeley Church in May 2011, used toy figurines as their cake toppers ($5) and vintage 45s for table numbers (printing cost them only $5). Music is a shared passion, so the couple dug up old records from the bride’s parents’ basement and local thrift shops.

- Tony Huang and Janice Kee-Son, married in August 2011 at the Berkeley Field House, created a photo station (total cost: $232; that’s $144 for a Fuji Instax camera, $80 for film and $8 for string and clothes pegs). The couple strung up their engagement photos and friends and family added their quick snaps at the reception. Guests had fun contributing to the wall throughout the night.

- Lauren Schreiber and Kevin Sasaki, married in August 2011 at the Gladstone Hotel (followed by a reception at The Garrison music hall), personalized the city’s trendiest wedding favour: jars of jam. The jam came from A Bisket-A Basket at the St. Lawrence Market ($3.50 each). The couple customized it with a gingham top (50 cents each) and labels made by a graphic designer friend.

DIY is an amazing way to have a cheap wedding that doesn’t look cheap. Especially love the customized jam gift that supports local business (at the market and local designers). StickerYou.com is another local (Toronto) business that provides really inexpensive, really professional-looking labels!
