Clement Virgo, Director He has a weighty list of directing credits (Lie With Me, The Wire, The L Word), but Virgo’s first job was in fashion as a window dresser for Harry Rosen. “I used to be very style-conscious,” he says. “I even got caught up with the Miami Vice look in the ’80s. Now I like simple basics—American Apparel T-shirts and pullovers.” As Damon D’Oliveira’s producing partner, Virgo has three films on the go and directs episodes of CTV’s hit The Listener. Michèle Maheux, TIFF executive director Maheux, now working her 21st Toronto film fest, is arguably the busiest person in the city this month. Rocco Matteo, Production designer Matteo, who is married to Comrags co-designer Joyce Gunhouse, is a self-professed sneaker junkie. (He still has the white high-top Pro-Keds he wore in high school.) His next project, MTV’s Turn the Beat Around, is a Toronto-shot film about L.A.’s underground disco scene. WEARING: J. Nelofer Pazira, Filmmaker She grew up in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Canada, and won a 2003 Gemini for her documentary Return to Kandahar. Her next doc, Act of Dishonour, is about honour killings in Afghanistan and comes out this fall. Niv Fichman, Producer He produced Blindness, Passchen­daele and, most recently, the Paul Gross rom-com Gunless, which finished shooting this summer and is slated for release next spring. “It’s a western set in Canada,” Fichman says. “Hence the title.” He sticks with modern, minimalist labels, such as Issey Miyake and Costume National, and never wears ties. WEARING: Shirt, shoes (Nike Zvezdochkas, a collaboration with Marc Newson) and Costume National bespoke suit are his own.

Nadia Litz, Actor She’s known as the beret-wearing cyclist who flipped off the world in 2006’s Monkey Warfare, but Litz is now moving behind the camera as a student in the director’s program at the Canadian Film Centre. Sudz Sutherland, Writer and director David “Sudz” Sutherland is following up last year’s feature Toronto Stories with Guns, a two-part CBC miniseries on North American gun culture starring Elisha Cuthbert that’s set to air this month. Fashion-wise, he favours such sporty brands as Hoax Couture and likes to experiment with colour. “Men don’t do it enough,” he says. Charlotte Mickie, Film distribution executive Whether she’s wearing a multi­coloured antique coat with gold heels or skinny jeans and a simple white T, Mickie—an executive VP of international film sales—tops it all off with her signature glasses, which she found on sale for $35 at Josephson Opticians. Her company, E1 Entertainment International, is distributing Reginald Harkema’s Leslie, My Name Is Evil. Carly Davenport, Art department apprentice Style on the film set has come a long way, says Davenport, a 25-year-old aspiring set designer: “It isn’t just old guys in safari vests anymore.” She likes to wear bright colours and her friends’ band T-shirts. Her most recent project is Scott Pilgrim Versus the World. Carson T. Foster, Rigging grip The former Naked News anchor and Rivoli talent booker says his style plateaued in 1989 with a punk aesthetic (Lip Service pants and ratty T-shirts borrowed from his girlfriend). He worked as a rigging grip on such locally shot blockbusters as The Incredible Hulk, Assault on Precinct 13 and the upcoming Jude Law and Forest Whitaker sci-fi flick Repossession Mambo. WEARING: Religion shirt ($110 at Due West); Religion leather jacket ($375 at Due West); boots (Aldo) and plaid pants (Hells Belles) are his own.

Damon D’Oliveira, Producer D’Oliveira has two movies in the final stages of development: The Collectors, about paparazzi culture, and Miss Clanfield and the Manitoba Kid, a lesbian western. His production company recently acquired the film rights to Lawrence Hill’s The Book of Negroes. Kristin Booth The Genie- and Gemini-winning actor (Young People Fucking, ReGenesis) thinks shoes make the outfit. “Without fabulous heels, even a Dolce and Gabbana dress can look ordinary,” she says. “But pair an H&M dress with Louboutin platforms and you look like a million bucks.” This year, three of her films were TIFF contenders, including At Home by Myself With You and Defendor, with Kat Dennings and Sandra Oh.
