The crush in Toronto’s malls and retail strips before Christmas means that many shoppers are tempted to wear the eminently practical uniform of sneakers, a comfortable coat and perhaps a set of elbow pads. Holt Renfrew’s well-heeled clientele, however, don’t succumb so easily. When we visited last week, shoppers young and old showed off their sartorial acumen by pairing tailored wool or leather coats with eye-grabbing accessories like whimsical shoes and luxurious fur collars. And, as one would expect at a luxury department store, we also saw a lot of high-end purses and impeccable manicures. The one surprise: the typical Holts glamour girls with blown-out hair and Louboutins were notably absent (perhaps they’re all in St. Barts at this time of year).
