Over the weekend, Sears hauled the last fixtures out of its space at Toronto Eaton Centre. The frantic sale signs and jumbled bargain bins were sad in a chaotic way, but this empty, featureless concourse is far eerier. American retailer Nordstrom will move in by December 2016, so construction should get underway soon enough. Until then, the retail dead zone will just be sitting there. Waiting.
If Sears is gone, is the Sears head office still above the abandoned space, or has it moved elsewhere?
From what I understand, Sears’ Canadian HQ will remain in the building, since their original lease provides for ridiculously low rent for a number of years – $1/square foot per month, if I remember correctly!
Looks like it would be just as hard as always to find a sales clerk in that place. No wonder they could never make any sales.
So where do I go to get my watch fixed?
