Jeremy Laing’s post-goth models wear bleached velvet, mohair and more

On Sunday morning at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, Jeremy Laing showed his fall/winter 2012 collection to a crowd that included Hope Atherton, Terrence Koh, Elle magazine’s Kate Lanphear, T magazine’s Jacob Brown, Holt Renfrew’s Ruth Ann Lockhart, Tommy Ton and New York party fixture Ladyfag. Models with blank stares walked down the runway in shades of black and grey, with no sign of the digital prints we have come to expect from Laing. Instead, a striking bleached velvet print and layered tailored pieces dominated the runway, with importance placed on texture—kelp cotton, antique leather, denim velvet, chain detailing, wool and mohair. A long, sexy black dress reminded us of the old Laing, while structured shoulders reminded us a bit of FrankenBrowne—albeit, much more subtle. We’ve come to expect fairly consistent work from Laing, so it was a real pleasure to see him tackle merging men’s and women’s wear, altering his past takes on velvet and veering away from the prints that gave him his early steam.
