The Daily Mail has reported that British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has committed suicide. From the article:

A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: ‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’

The news comes days before the start of London fashion week, and three years after the suicide of McQueen’s close friend and patron Isabella Blow. Full details of his death have not yet been released.

Update: The BBC has published a statement from McQueen’s office, which follows. In it, the designer is referred to as Lee, his given first name.

“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. “At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family. “Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
