Last month, we reported that the massive Chapters store next to the Scotiabank Theatre was closing, which was disappointing news for local book-lovers and bored movie-goers alike. There is an upside, though: until May 31, the giant outlet is selling off its stock at bargain-basement prices. All books are going for 50 per cent off, so now is the time to grab that copy of The Goldfinch you keep claiming you’re going to read—or the latest Shopaholic installment, if that’s more your speed. And, while you’re at it, you can bid farewell to one of the few decent bookstores in the downtown core.

I wonder just how much this is going to affect the ticket sales at Paramount’s (I refuse to call it by its new name) other theaters have bookstores nearby.
ALL books or bargain books are an additional 50% off? I was there yesterday, and only those at bargain prices had the additional % off. Please clarify, thanks!

The entire store only went on sale yesterday (Tuesday the 13th). Previously, it was only select titles. -A Chapters Employee (for now)
That is truly lovely. You (and other customers who actually value our store) should share that with us more often. You know, while you still can and all. It’s nice to know that there are still a few people who feel the way we do about it.
Shame. Love that place. The design and feel was awesome. This was inevitable for brick and mortar book stores, but it was such a great place to take hangout in the neighbourhood. I seriously hope something good replaces it, but have feeling that won’t be the case…

Is it only books that are on sale?
Yes, all the other product has either been shipped elsewhere or sold. Last I saw, there are still a few other random things kicking around but not very much.
How deliciously ironic that after Chapters helped close down hundreds of small independent book stores are now being forced out by even bigger online retailers. No sympathy from me.
Maybe this will lead to a resurgence of small bookstores to fill the gap. That would be perfect karma.
all these comments about how nice it was to hang out there….thats part of why its done….its first goal it to sell books…..not to provide a space to hang out.
Sell books at regular price… nobody’s a reader. Sell books at 50% off, all of a sudden, everybody’s a bookworm. I wonder where all these people were back when this place wasn’t about to close.

Shopping at Bakka Phoenix – a tiny, independent, local, wonderful store with great and knowledgeable staff. But I might go to chapters and buy some 50% off books…
Probably not at all. I suspect a lot of the Chapters traffic were movie goers killing time before a movie. That’s definitely what I did. It wasn’t the bookstore that brought me to that intersection.
Borrowing books from the library and reading the same books cheaper by buying the ebook.
Hope there are still some kids books I can buy up for my nephew.

Nonsense, it was due to people like you that point a finger at others when it was you that didn’t support your local independents. Over and above the fact the the number one item bought via internet sales is books and have always been the number one item. Remember people vote with their dollars – if an independent bookstore failed it is because the public has the right to vote with their dollars and if they chose not to support that store, any store, that is indeed their choice. Your excuse is lame, tiresome, silly, and simply wrong. We do still live in a world of commerce and shops come and go. To suggest that one caused the defeat of another is wrong, it is the public like you!, that is to blame – if even blame is the word, which I don’t think it is. It is simply economics.
Wow, it’s really amazing that from my one post, you can glean that I didn’t support independents. In fact, I purchased only from independents for as long as there were any. You show a remarkable lack of understanding of the corporate world, particularly strategies known as predatory and pre-emptive pricing. I won’t take the time to explain it all to you, even if I thought you were intelligent enough to grasp it, so you’ll have to look it up. The reason independents are out of business is because of “let-the-market-decide” troglodytes who would rather see small local businesses get crushed by the economic might of bulk stores so they can save a few dollars on a book or pair of socks. A host of locally owned businesses have been forced out so big box retailers can send the profits to corporation central (usually not even in the same country let alone the same town or province).

I truly am sorry you are losing your job. But tell me, did you worry about how many jobs; how many businesses Chapters cost when their voracious business practices shut down just about every independent book seller in Canada?
You mean when I WAS working for an indie store in Oshawa at GNU Books (go ahead and call them, they can verify my employment, ask for Jeff, they are still there in a town with a Chapters).

You are talking about something that happened OVER 2 DECADES AGO! Sure, some may still close like any other indie business out there, but that’s just the nature of it. The ones that are still around have been for a long time. Are you on a first name basis with anyone at these indie shops? I am. I still go to one in Scarborough (there since my childhood) The Paperback Exchange where I have a file for comics.
A new Book City is re-opening Bloor West. Go to Roncesvalle, The Annex, check out the small communities. No, there aren’t many in the heart of the city unless it’s part of a bigger chain like BMV. But do you have any idea of the rent for a store in Toronto is?
