Ashley Rowe, the young Toronto designer, presented her small spring collection in a dark warehouse last night. The look: fancy Friar Tuck. Rowe’s clothes have featured loose silhouettes and creative dyeing methods before (remember those splatter-paint blazers and dresses?), but this latest crop of designs takes bagginess to the proportions of a monk’s robes and cribs colour from Haight-Ashbury psychedelia—the fabric is tie-dyed. Over at the Globe, Tiyana Grulovic calls Rowe “a straight-up artist,” and while we applaud her daring, we wonder whether Torontonians are bold enough to wear these clothes.
