It’s loud and fearless and showy. We like it

2012 is shaping up to be a preposterously fun year. Spring showed up early. Bryan Adams is touring again (woot woot!). And the city’s tastemakers are all wearing super-bright colours. It’s a trend inspired by nostalgia for the sporty vibe of the ’80s and ’90s: neon is back, and while there aren’t any jumpsuits, casual is the thing (sorry, Mad Men). But this time around, it’s more sophisticated.

- Abstract Expressionism
Colour blocking emerged as an art form when Mondrian pitted yellow, blue and red squares against a grid in the name of total abstraction and absolute truth. In fashion, the principles are similar. In this particularly 2012 case, the absolute truth is that glow-stick yellow and royal purple are, awesomely, complementary.

1 | Acne Sunglasses. $350. - Hit the Sac
As recently as this winter, every other woman in Toronto was carrying a giant brown-on-black Longchamp Le Pliage tote. That’s over. This spring, fashionable Torontonians are carrying smaller versions of traditional styles—satchels, clutches, saddle bags—in bold, Popsicle-hued leather.

1 | See by Chloé mini saddlebag. $325. - Pumped-up Kicks
Boat shoes. Oxfords. Loafers. They’re the epitome of prep, beacons of understated cool. And while Oxford dons might balk, this season, the shoes come in much less understated, neon shades—the same colours (and styles, for that matter) for both men and women.

1 | Sperry Top-sider. $120. - Quality Time
Much has been made recently of the obsolescence of the watch. It may be true, but it’s completely beside the point. The wristwatch is still an excellent accessory, an easy place for the timid, neutral-loving masses to throw a small hit of colour. Or a not-so-small hit, as the case may be.

1 | Lacoste Rio Purple watch. $175. Lacoste, 131 Bloor St. W., 416-513-1212

2 | Lacoste Colour Block Goa watch. $95. Very nice. If only we could convince everyone to wear something brighter in the winter, when its a sea of dreary, depressing black and grey coats.
