When Humphrey Bogart donned one in Casablanca, the fedora made the transition from ominous Al Capone staple to symbol of stoic masculinity. Since then, the hat has worked its way around the pop culture circuit, topping the heads of Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Notorious BIG, Johnny Depp and many a film gangster. This summer, straw versions (typically a bone colour with black band) are bang-on trend. The fedora we found at Studio We is not only one of the cheapest around ($28), but also a perfect gift for hip dads. Good quality and a Toronto connection—both the brand (Delux) and designer (David Setka) are local—are selling features, but we like the material used: paper that’s been strengthened, dyed and woven in circles, giving the appearance of straw with none of the itch. It also means the hat is light and crushable—perfect for packing away for a weekend at the cottage or a trip to Morocco.
