Best of Fall 2012: the ambitious—and sexy—new collection from Greta Constantine

When Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong launched their fashion label, Greta Constantine, in 2006, it seemed like an excuse to throw great parties and hang out with socialites. But they soon revealed themselves to be seriously talented designers, selling their ready-to-wear collections at Holt’s and showing at New York’s fashion week. Their drapey gowns have since travelled red carpets on Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Hudson and Angelina Jolie.

GC’s fall 2012 collection is surprisingly ambitious and inspired, making ample use of lambskin and sequins. It’s a distinct departure from the designs that got them noticed, which tended to shroud bodies under heaps of fabric, like super-slinky Roman togas. Their new designs are defined by sharper, cleaner lines: the cutaway panels of one snow-white dress emphasize an hourglass shape; a forest-green number with oversized epaulets is like a military uniform reimagined for Joan Holloway. The collection is their largest to date, both in scope and in sales—they’ve already received twice as many orders as their spring collection. And their buzz has gone international: the label will be available, for the first time, in such far-flung locales as Moscow, Dublin, St. Barth’s, Madrid and Cairo. Seems like reason enough to throw a party.
